Once an area of farmland, and named after an avenue of trees near the station, Carshalton Beeches grew rapidly after the First World War. Now an upmarket suburb of the picturesque town of Carshalton, in whose ponds the River Wandle rises, its post-war expansion has given it an abundance of 1920s and 1930s family homes with large gardens.

The area was famous for its lavender at the turn of the last century and still has a three-acre lavender field, a volunteer-run, not-for-profit enterprise which is open every July for people to pick their own.

Dickinson designed and built the house himself in the early 1900s and it is full of his paintings, hand-made furniture, furnishings, metalwork and carving.

Carshalton Beeches station has two trains an hour to London Bridge, which is just under half an hour away, and four to London Victoria.
