To fans of 1980s synthpop, Basildon will always be revered as the town that gave us the great Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet, and hence Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure. It's also the biggest town in the borough of the same name, one of 11 new towns created after the Second World War to accommodate London's overflowing population, and now one of Essex's major urban centres.

The borough has three large towns – Basildon, Billericay and Wickford – and offers everything you'd expect: leisure centres, playgrounds, a soft play centre, community centres, libraries, bowling greens, skate parks, a theatre and a golf club. Five-time Olympic gymnastics medallist Max Whitlock trains at Basildon Sporting Village, which has an Olympic-size swimming pool, gym, sports hall, indoor climbing wall and athletics facilities.

The town is also home to a large number of commuters thanks to its excellent access to the City: it has three stations on the London to Southend line, Pitsea, Basildon and Laindon. There are eight peak-time trains an hour from Basildon to Fenchurch Street, taking around 40 minutes.

Basildon is also something of a business centre in its own right: Costa and Ford Motor Company are among the multi-million-pound corporations that have a presence here. Of course, there are plenty of smaller companies too, from local estate agents and taxi firms to graphic designers and security specialists.
